Work & impact

Experience behind the business

Over a decade of information management and BIM work across defence and security sensitive estates, healthcare, retail and logistics, heritage regeneration and large scale commercial development, in sectors with different standards, different pressures and very different levels of digital maturity.

The work below is Dan Black's own track record, built in senior client side and consultancy roles and carried into this Dan Black Digital. It runs from organisational BIM strategy and ISO 19650 implementation through to Golden Thread delivery on higher risk buildings.

The common thread is taking an organisation from an unclear position to a defined one, and leaving capability behind that outlasts the engagement.

Case Studies

Global logistics and data centre operator

Multi-Site Verification & Technical Assurance

Global Logistics and Data Centre Operator

Delivered verification services across multiple international sites supporting logistics and data centre development. Work covered detailed site analysis, technical reporting and drawing production used to evidence compliance, confirm quality and inform client decision making at handover.

The client gained an evidence base to sign off completed works with confidence, and a verification method consistent enough to repeat across a global portfolio.

Security sensitive estate, London

Client-Side Information Management & Organisational BIM Implementation

Security Sensitive Estate, London

Acted as client BIM representative, information manager and coordinator across a programme of redevelopment projects for a major London landowner, alongside setting the wider BIM strategy for the organisation itself.

Delivered strategy documentation, compliance frameworks, model coordination and defined data outputs against high security requirements, ISO 19650 and facilities management integration needs across the asset lifecycle. The organisation moved from project by project delivery to a consistent client side position, with information requirements the supply chain could be held to and asset data that transferred into operational use.

Central London mixed use redevelopment

Strategic Information Management for a Private Estate Owner

Central London Mixed Use Redevelopment

Directed the implementation of BIM and digital delivery on a significant central London redevelopment for a long term estate owner. Developed ISO 19650 aligned frameworks tied to the client's own objectives on asset performance, sustainability and operational efficiency.

Information requirements were connected to what the estate needed after handover, so digital delivery supported long term asset value across the whole lifecycle.

NHS estates, multiple trusts

BIM Consultancy & Implementation Across Healthcare Estates

NHS Estates, Multiple Trusts

Provided consultancy and implementation support to several NHS Trusts, each at a different starting point. Work covered strategic guidance, alignment to digital and healthcare standards, and the information management processes needed to meet estate specific goals.

Each Trust ended with an approach built around its own estate, its own team and its own constraints, and enough internal understanding to keep it running.

Heritage venue regeneration, London

Survey Modelling & Existing Conditions Data

Heritage Venue Regeneration, London

Led survey modelling for a complex heritage and regeneration scheme, overseeing delivery of detailed Revit models produced from point cloud data. Models were built to be accurate and usable for design, coordination and planning across a multi phase development.

The design and delivery teams worked from a reliable record of existing conditions on a building where assumptions carried real cost and programme risk.

Mixed use retail and leisure destination

Golden Thread Strategy for a Higher-Risk Building

Mixed Use Retail & Leisure Destination

Strategic lead on Golden Thread strategy for a complex mixed use asset containing higher risk residential accommodation. Ran stakeholder engagement across the ownership, management and operational teams to assess existing safety critical information against Building Safety Act requirements.

The output was a phased recommendations pack covering common data environment, survey strategy, governance and an implementation roadmap. The client moved from an uncertain position on what information existed and where, to a defined route toward compliance with an order of work it could resource and fund.

Tier one contractor

Organisation-Wide ISO 19650 Gap Analysis

Tier One Contractor

Led an ISO 19650 gap analysis across the organisation, reviewing BIM and information management documentation against the requirements for certification readiness. Worked directly with the client team to close non-conformances, producing appointment documentation, responsibility matrices and assessment templates.

The organisation reached a position where its documentation held up to external assessment, and its teams applied information management consistently across appointments rather than project by project.

Acute NHS Trust

Organisational, Asset & Project Information Requirements

Acute NHS Trust

Developed OIR, AIR and PIR for an acute hospital estate, aligned to clinical priorities, operational needs and the realities of the estate itself. The work translated organisational objectives into requirements that were clear enough for supply chain teams to act on.

The Trust gained requirements that guided project delivery, supported compliance, and improved the consistency and quality of information handed into operation.

Defence organisation

Common Data Environment Maturity Assessment

Defence Organisation

Led a maturity assessment of the common data environment used across high security projects, reviewing configuration, governance and how the platform was used day to day. The work combined stakeholder interviews with benchmarking against comparable organisations, producing phased recommendations for consistency and long term sustainability.

Recommendations were sequenced to fit the organisation's wider digital roadmap, giving a realistic route to improvement across a highly controlled environment.

Acute hospital, national building programme

BIM Strategy & Implementation Roadmap

Acute Hospital, National Building Programme

Led development of the BIM strategy for a new acute hospital delivered under a national hospital building programme. Translated the Trust's information requirements into an ISO 19650 aligned strategy defining governance, information management processes, common data environment approach and an implementation roadmap.

The strategy supported operational readiness at handover, established clear long term ownership of the data, and left the estate positioned for digital twin capability when the Trust chooses to pursue it.

ISO 19650 certification body

Certification Scheme Framework Redesign

ISO 19650 Certification Body

Complete redesign of an ISO 19650 accreditation scheme framework. Assessed the existing framework, ran a gap analysis against ISO 19650-2 requirements for all three appointing and appointed party types, measured the scheme against UKAS requirements for certification schemes, and rebuilt the framework accordingly.

The body was left with a scheme that stood up to accreditation scrutiny and assessed organisations against the standard as written.
